Borough Hall Farmer’s Market In A Time Of Social Distancing

Saturday was perfect weather for a visit to the farmer’s market at Borough Hall. Being the weekend (yes, what is a weekend?) and beautiful out, more people were out and about than in recent weeks. But at the farmer’s market, calm and order ruled the day. Shoppers were advised to keep a distance and to not touch any of the goods. There were chalked signs on the ground marking the spots for shoppers to stand in line. There was fresh air and fresh produce, and a feeling that maybe we’ll get through this afterall. Just look at this expert social distancing.

CLARK STREET BUSINESS OWNERS CLAIM MTA LEFT THEM IN THE DARK ON STATION CLOSURE

Transit honchos are planning to fast track repairs at Clark Street subway station in Brooklyn Heights, but business owners in the station say they’re being left in the dark. The Metropolitan Transit Authority plans to shutter the station for eight months while conducting desperately needed repairs on the station’s three elevators, which are the only methods of reaching the deep-underground station.

While agency officials sent out a press release on the decision on Feb. 14, shop owners in the station say they were never informed of the decision — which they fear will be catastrophic to their bottom-line, and force some of them to close. “They didn’t tell us nothing now,” said Chan Han, owner of Han’s Market, a convenience store housed in the station. Every business owner interviewed by the Brooklyn Paper on Monday afternoon said they were similarly unaware. Salahuddin Aziz, the owner of a newspaper stand inside the station, said the station’s closure would likely kill his business. Read entire story:

Post Office Workers Walk Out for Lack of Protective Gear

by Claude Scales on March 27, 20209:49 pm in CoronavirusDowntown BrooklynHealth

We have it on good authority – our mail carrier, who was here yesterday – that there may be no mail delivery for several days, because the Postal Service has failed to deliver sufficient protective gear – gloves and masks – to workers at the main Brooklyn post office (photo; By Beyond My Ken – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=25016206). Can you blame them? We hope they get the needed supplies soon.

A Sign of Brighter Times Ahead

Thanks to Board Member Dawn Brekke who managed to get her hands on an assortment of multi-colored tulip bulbs and bright yellow pansies, we have an early Spring planting in front of the building. A little bit of cheer as we all get through this rough time together.

Brooklyn Heights Association Posts Restaurants Open for Business

As of this morning, many neighborhood restaurants are open for takeout & delivery and can really use your patronage. Many are also offering gift certificates or gift cards that can be purchased now and redeemed in the future.

In addition, a number of restaurants and businesses have set up GoFundMe or Venmo accounts to support their staff during this difficult time. Please check their Instagram, Facebook or websites to learn more.

This list is of course subject to change and may be incomplete.

We are in the process of updating the resources section of our website to reflect the status of other neighborhood businesses including retail and services. Click below for full list:

Noodle Pudding Goes Online!

Talk about unprecedented times! Noodle Pudding has famously and proudly never had a website, social media presence, or even a sign on their facade. Because why would it bother? It’s still the neighborhood’s favorite restaurant according to our readers, and packed nightly. But, with all NYC restaurants closed to dining in, Noodle Pudding now has an Instagram account to keep customers updated on their take-out menu. Check it out @NoodlePuddingToGo. Current menus and wine lists (with some prices slashed) are posted there. Call (718) 625-3737 to order.

The restaurant has also posted its menu and contact info on its windows. Even Juliana’s (pizza) is now delivering to Brooklyn Heights. For more neighborhood food news, go to http://brooklynheightsblog.com
